ISLAMABAD: The Embassy of Russia in Pakistan marked the 81st anniversary of Victory Day with a series of commemorative events in Islamabad, including the “Immortal Regiment” march, a cultural programme and a photo exhibition honouring the Soviet victory in World War II.
The event on May 7 was attended by Russian Chargé d’Affaires Natalia Shmeleva, Russian Defence Attaché Colonel Vadim Fenchenko, diplomats from several Central Asian countries, embassy staff and members of the Russian community in Pakistan.
The “Immortal Regiment” march is an annual remembrance event held around Victory Day on May 9. Participants carry portraits of relatives who fought or contributed to the Soviet war effort during what Russia refers to as the Great Patriotic War.
According to the Russian Embassy, the march is intended to preserve the memory of those who served during World War II and honour their sacrifices across generations.
As part of the celebrations, the Russian Embassy School hosted a commemorative concert attended by ambassadors from Azerbaijan, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.
In her remarks, Natalia Shmeleva described Victory Day as a symbol of courage, unity and sacrifice by the peoples of the former Soviet Union during World War II. She also criticised attempts to distort historical events related to the war.
The event featured wartime poetry recitations and musical performances by children of embassy staff. Guests also visited a photo exhibition titled “Saved Europe,” organised by the National Center for Historical Memory under the President of the Russian Federation.
