Pakistan facing coordinated propaganda campaign from abroad, says Tarar

ISLAMABAD — Federal Information Minister Attaullah Tarar on Thursday said Pakistan has been facing a coordinated misinformation campaign originating from outside the country, aimed at creating confusion and undermining Pakistan’s role in promoting regional peace.

In a statement shared on social media, Tarar said the campaign relied on unverified claims attributed to unnamed officials and sources, which he described as an attempt to spread deliberate misinformation.

The minister said several domestic media organizations and independent fact-checking platforms had already rejected what he called “propaganda” linked to the campaign.

According to Tarar, the effort was being driven by elements opposed to peace and stability in the region, as well as Pakistan’s ongoing counterterrorism operations against what he described as foreign-sponsored terrorism.

He said certain groups were uncomfortable with Pakistan’s role in promoting regional peace and fighting militancy, adding that “elimination of terrorism, resolution of disputes and prevalence of peace” did not suit those behind the campaign.

Tarar also praised Pakistani media organizations and social media influencers for highlighting and countering what he described as coordinated disinformation efforts.

The information minister said Pakistan and its media would continue exposing what he called malicious attempts to spread false narratives against the country.
