ISLAMABAD: Telecom operator Zong highlighted its renewable energy and climate resilience initiatives during the Breathe Pakistan International Climate Change Conference 2026, as policymakers, businesses and climate experts gathered to discuss Pakistan’s growing environmental challenges.

The two-day conference focused on climate risks facing Pakistan, including floods, heatwaves, air pollution, water scarcity and food insecurity, while examining the role of public and private sector collaboration in developing long-term climate solutions.

Speaking during a panel discussion on private sector climate leadership, Zong Deputy Director Network Operations Najeeb Ullah Khan said climate action has become a major operational priority for the company.

He said Zong is investing in energy-efficient infrastructure, renewable energy systems and intelligent network technologies to strengthen operational resilience and maintain communication services during climate-related disruptions.

According to the company, around 85 percent of its network sites have been shifted to solar and lithium-ion energy systems, generating approximately 1.43 million kilowatt-hours of clean energy annually.

Zong said these systems helped maintain uninterrupted connectivity during flood-related disruptions in Sindh and Balochistan, supporting communication services for emergency responders and affected communities.

The company also highlighted environmental initiatives carried out with the Ministry of Climate Change and Pak-EPA, including the plantation of 3,500 indigenous trees in Islamabad.

Zong added that flexible work practices introduced as part of its sustainability strategy have contributed to monthly energy savings exceeding 22,000 kilowatt-hours.

The conference brought together corporate leaders, policymakers and development institutions to discuss climate resilience, sustainable development and the role of businesses in addressing environmental challenges in Pakistan.
