CANBERRA, July 7, 2026: A new medical study in Australia has found that vitamin D deficiency may not only weaken bones but also increase the risk of heart disease and high blood pressure.

According to the study, researchers found a strong link between low vitamin D levels and cardiovascular disease. Using genetic evidence, they reported that people with low vitamin D may face more than double the risk of heart-related illness compared with those who maintain adequate levels.

Experts said cardiovascular diseases remain among the leading causes of death worldwide, making vitamin D deficiency an important public health concern.

The study noted that while severe deficiency is less common, moderate vitamin D deficiency is widespread, especially among people who spend most of their time indoors and receive limited sunlight.

Researchers said vitamin D can be obtained from foods such as fish, eggs and fortified products, but diet alone often may not provide enough of the nutrient.

Health experts said sunlight remains the easiest and most effective natural source of vitamin D. They advised that people who cannot get enough sunlight should consult a doctor before using daily vitamin D supplements.
