KARACHI: Pakistani actress and model Sunita Marshall has spoken about what she described as inappropriate behaviour by some husbands toward their wives, saying that making jokes about wives in gatherings with male friends is common in South Asian culture.
Speaking on a morning show, Marshall claimed that around 98% of men make fun of their wives when sitting with friends, adding that she believes the behaviour is particularly prevalent in what she described as the “desi” culture.

Marshall said that husbands sometimes ridicule their wives when they offer advice or make a comment in front of others, even though disagreements could instead be discussed privately and respectfully.
She argued that such behaviour is linked to attitudes in which wives are considered inferior to their husbands.
The actress also pointed to differences in the way husbands and wives address each other, saying wives often use respectful forms of address for their husbands, while some husbands use more informal language with their wives because they consider them younger or socially subordinate.
According to Marshall, this mindset can contribute to husbands believing they have the right to make fun of their wives.
