PARIS: French police detained more than 200 people after clashes broke out during celebrations following Paris Saint-Germain’s UEFA Champions League victory, authorities said on Saturday.
The unrest occurred as thousands of supporters gathered across Paris and other parts of France to celebrate PSG’s triumph. Authorities deployed 22,000 police officers nationwide, including 8,000 in the capital, amid concerns about potential disturbances during post-match celebrations.
According to France’s Interior Ministry, 326 people were detained across the country, including 235 in Paris. Officials did not immediately confirm how many of those detained would face further legal proceedings.
Police reported damage to six vehicles and two businesses during the disturbances. One police officer was also injured.
Large crowds gathered along the Champs-Élysées and near PSG’s Parc des Princes stadium, where thousands of supporters watched the match. Authorities said around 20,000 people converged on the Champs-Élysées following the final.
Transport disruptions and property damage
As part of security measures, several metro stations were closed, tram services were suspended, and bus routes were diverted in parts of Paris.
Police said supporters temporarily blocked sections of the city’s ring road, the Périphérique, while setting off flares. Authorities also seized around 100 fireworks and two dozen flares during the operation.
A bus shelter was destroyed near the Champs-Élysées, while a bakery and a restaurant near Parc des Princes sustained damage.
Officials said a group of individuals attempted to enter the stadium through one of the gates but were prevented from doing so by police. Clashes later broke out outside the venue, where officers used tear gas after projectiles and fireworks were reportedly thrown at security personnel.
Security remains in focus ahead of victory parade
French Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau said authorities had implemented extensive security measures to maintain public order during the celebrations.
The incidents occurred ahead of a planned victory parade in Paris, where PSG players are expected to meet supporters near the Eiffel Tower before attending a reception hosted by President Emmanuel Macron.
Authorities expect around 100,000 people to attend the celebrations in the French capital.
