Pakistan’s hockey team faced an embarrassing and unusual situation during its opening match against England at the 2026 Hockey World Cup.

According to reports, the Pakistan team had forgotten essential protective equipment used during penalty corners in the dressing room.

The issue came to light when England were awarded a penalty corner and the required protective gear was not available on the field. Pakistan captain Imad Butt reportedly had to rush towards the dressing room to retrieve the equipment.

The unusual delay resulted in the referee showing the Pakistan captain a green card, temporarily removing him from the field for two minutes.

Former Olympian Salman Akbar criticised the incident on social media, saying that such negligence at one of international hockey’s biggest tournaments raised questions about the team’s preparation and administrative discipline.

Protective equipment is particularly important during penalty corners because it is designed to protect players from high-speed shots. Its absence on the field was therefore viewed as a significant organisational lapse.

The incident highlighted that success at a major international tournament requires more than tactics, fitness and technical ability. Proper preparation, organisation and professional discipline are equally important.

Pakistan ultimately lost the opening match 4-1 to England.
