Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s ruling parliamentary party has decided to adopt a political and legal strategy against the federal government over budget-related, financial and constitutional concerns.
The decision was made during an emergency parliamentary party meeting chaired by Chief Minister Muhammad Sohail Afridi at Pakhtunkhwa House in Islamabad, where provincial lawmakers discussed what they described as the protection of the province’s constitutional, financial and political rights.
According to the meeting details, a special team of legal experts has been formed to review constitutional and legal options related to the provincial budget. The team will assess possible scenarios if a meeting with PTI founder Imran Khan is not arranged and will prepare a legal course of action on the budget and the province’s constitutional rights.
KP Forms Legal Team on Budget Issues
The parliamentary party said any attempt to interfere with Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s budget would not be accepted. It also said decisions regarding federal cuts in the province’s development funds would not be accepted without consultation with Imran Khan.
The committee warned that the federal government would face political resistance if the province’s financial and development rights were affected.
Chief Minister Sohail Afridi said the 2026-27 financial year would be a year of development, peace and public welfare in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. He said the provincial government would continue development work despite obstacles.
Afridi also said the provincial budget for 2026-27 would not be kept as a surplus budget, citing public interest and development needs. He asked the federal government to explain the legal basis for restrictions on meetings with Imran Khan.
Parliamentary Party Condemns Islamabad Protest Action
The parliamentary party also condemned the Islamabad administration and police over the use of force against what it called a peaceful protest by public representatives.
According to the party, several assembly members, including Meena Khan Afridi, Dr Hameed, Tufail Anjum and Dawood Afridi, were injured during the police action, while some lawmakers reportedly suffered fractures.
The meeting described the action as an attack on democratic values and said the matter would be raised at relevant political and legal forums.
The development comes amid continuing tensions between the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government and the Centre over budgetary matters, provincial rights and access to the PTI founder.
