Katrina Kaif is now widely recognized as one of Bollywood’s popular dance performers, but her journey was not always easy. Early in her career, the actress reportedly faced harsh criticism over her dancing skills, with one choreographer allegedly telling her she was a “zero” at dance and should leave the field.
Choreographer Bosco Martis recently recalled the episode during a podcast discussion with choreographer Farah Khan, reflecting on Kaif’s early career and her transformation as a performer.
According to Bosco, the criticism may have motivated Kaif to work harder and prove herself. Farah, who was also part of the discussion, expressed surprise at the assessment, suggesting that Kaif’s dancing ability at the time may have been closer to a four or five out of 10 rather than zero.
‘Sheila Ki Jawani’ Became a Turning Point
Farah identified “Sheila Ki Jawani,” from the 2010 film Tees Maar Khan, as a major turning point in Kaif’s dancing career. She said the performance marked a significant improvement, placing Kaif’s abilities closer to a nine or 10 in her assessment.
Bosco also described the song as a game changer for Kaif. Following its success, she delivered memorable performances in songs including “Chikni Chameli” and “Kala Chashma,” further establishing herself as a prominent Bollywood dancer.
Farah also recalled choreographing Kaif for “Just Chill” from Maine Pyaar Kyun Kiya?, at a time when the actress had yet to become widely known for her dancing.
Encouragement Helped Change Her Approach
Kaif has previously spoken about the criticism she received over her dancing. She recalled reaching a point where she wondered whether she would ever become a good dancer.
Bosco, however, encouraged her by telling her that she could dance but needed to work harder on her skills. According to the account, that encouragement helped change Kaif’s approach and strengthened her determination to improve.
Bosco and Caesar later choreographed Kaif for “Touch Me” from Race. She went on to perform in several other popular songs, including “Kamli,” “Swag Se Swagat,” “Afghan Jalebi” and “Nachde Ne Saare.”
Kaif’s evolution from facing criticism over her dancing to becoming one of Bollywood’s recognizable dance performers has since become an example of how sustained practice and perseverance can transform a performer’s skills.
Kaif was last seen on the big screen in the 2024 film Merry Christmas, opposite Vijay Sethupathi. She has remained away from major theatrical releases since then.
