KARACHI: Thousands of residents across Karachi are facing prolonged electricity outages as scheduled and unscheduled load shedding continues during a period of intense heat. In several areas, power cuts are reportedly lasting up to 20 hours a day, disrupting daily life and affecting access to essential services.

The extended outages have triggered concerns among residents, many of whom say the electricity shortage is also affecting water supply, compounding difficulties during high temperatures. The situation highlights growing pressure on Karachi’s power infrastructure as electricity demand continues to rise.

Residents in Surjani Town, New Karachi, Baldia Town, Keamari, and Lyari reported experiencing between 18 and 20 hours of load shedding. Similar complaints were received from Federal B Area, Liaquatabad, and Lines Area, where power outages were reported to last up to 16 hours daily.

In Korangi and Landhi, residents said electricity interruptions were ranging between 12 and 16 hours, affecting households and businesses across multiple neighborhoods.

Responding to the complaints, K-Electric stated that uninterrupted electricity is being supplied to approximately 70 percent of the city’s feeders, while scheduled load shedding is being implemented on the remaining 30 percent.

According to the utility company, electricity demand in Karachi has surpassed 3,500 megawatts, placing additional strain on the distribution system during the ongoing heatwave.

The continued power outages have intensified public concerns over electricity availability and basic service delivery as temperatures remain elevated across Pakistan’s largest city.
