A US envoy has proposed replacing Iran with Italy at the upcoming FIFA World Cup, raising fresh questions over tournament participation as geopolitical tensions continue to affect international sport.
Paolo Zampolli, a representative linked to Donald Trump, said he had suggested to Gianni Infantino that Italy be included in place of Iran, whose matches are scheduled to take place in the United States.
Proposal linked to political context
The proposal comes amid heightened tensions involving Iran, with concerns raised over hosting its matches in the US during the World Cup, which will be co-hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
According to Financial Times, the move is also tied to broader diplomatic considerations, including efforts to ease relations between Washington and Giorgia Meloni.
Iran participation and FIFA stance
Iran secured qualification for a fourth consecutive World Cup, but its participation has come under scrutiny following recent developments. Iranian officials had requested relocating their matches outside the US, though FIFA has so far confirmed that fixtures will proceed as planned.
Iran’s football federation has said the team remains focused on preparation while awaiting any official decisions.
Under FIFA regulations, the governing body has the authority to replace a team if it withdraws or is deemed unable to participate.
Italy and replacement scenarios
Italy, a four-time World Cup champion, failed to qualify after losing its play-off match and has not featured in the tournament since 2014. The proposal suggests Italy as a potential replacement based on its historical standing in international football.
However, regional considerations may also play a role. The Asian Football Confederation could push for a replacement from within Asia, with teams such as the United Arab Emirates previously identified as possible contenders.
No official change announced
FIFA has not announced any changes to the tournament lineup. Preparations for the World Cup continue across host countries, with participating teams proceeding as scheduled.
