Federal Minister for Planning, Development and Special Initiatives Ahsan Iqbal said on Sunday that the Hyderabad–Sukkur motorway is expected to be completed within the next three to four years, as the government moves ahead with major infrastructure and public welfare projects in Sindh.
Speaking during the budget debate in the National Assembly, Iqbal was responding to points raised by MQM-P lawmaker Syed Waseem Hussain. He said work had already begun on the new alignment of the M-9 Karachi–Hyderabad motorway, while the federal government had also provided a grant for the establishment of a university in Hyderabad.
Hyderabad University Project
Iqbal said Hyderabad had remained deprived of higher education facilities for decades, adding that the federal grant for the university was aimed at expanding academic opportunities for young people in the region.
He said the Hyderabad University project, which was earlier expected to be completed by 2021, faced delays under previous administrations. However, he added that progress had been made in recent years, with several development initiatives being advanced for the city.
K-IV Water Project for Karachi
The planning minister also said the federal government remained committed to completing key infrastructure and public utility projects, including efforts to address Karachi’s water supply challenges.
He said water supply from the K-IV project to Karachi was expected to be completed by December 2026. After completion, operational responsibility for the project would be handed over to the provincial government.
Iqbal said sustained coordination between federal and provincial authorities was necessary to ensure timely completion and effective management of major public welfare schemes.
