ISLAMABAD, June 4: Heavy rainfall in Islamabad and Rawalpindi on Thursday brought a significant drop in temperatures, providing relief to residents after days of hot and humid weather.

Rain of varying intensity was recorded across the twin cities, while cooler winds improved weather conditions. The rainfall reduced heat levels but also led to water accumulation in some low-lying areas, affecting traffic flow in parts of both cities.

According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), further rain and thunderstorms are expected in Islamabad, Rawalpindi and surrounding areas over the coming hours, with pleasant weather likely to continue.

The department reported a total of 17 millimeters of rainfall across the twin cities. The highest rainfall was recorded in Shamsabad at 39 millimeters, followed by H-8 with 32 millimeters, Gawalmandi with 28 millimeters and Katarian with 26 millimeters.

WASA placed on high alert

In response to the rainfall, the Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA) placed its emergency teams on high alert and deployed staff and heavy machinery in vulnerable locations.

Managing Director WASA Azizullah Khan said drainage operations were underway in areas including Liaquat Bagh, Committee Chowk Underpass, Murree Road and Sadiqabad. He added that water levels in Leh Nullah remained within normal limits and were being continuously monitored.

Officials said field officers were supervising drainage operations to ensure the timely removal of rainwater from roads and residential areas.

More rain likely over next two days

Speaking to local media, PMD Deputy Director Anjum Nazir Zaigham said the current spell of rain could continue for another two days, contributing to lower temperatures in the region.

He also warned of strong winds, dust storms and thunderstorms in several parts of the country, with rain expected in some areas.

According to the meteorological department, weather conditions are likely to remain relatively pleasant in upper and central regions, while much of Sindh and Balochistan may continue to experience high temperatures.

Authorities have advised residents to follow weather updates and take necessary precautions during the ongoing weather system.
