KARACHI: The Arts Council of Pakistan Karachi presented the comedy-drama English Only as part of its ongoing School of Visual and Performing Arts (SOVAPA) Alumni Series.
The production, the seventh play in the alumni series, received a positive response from the audience, with viewers particularly appreciating the performances of the cast.
Written by American playwright Sanaz Toosi, English Only was adapted and directed by Awab Farhat. The cast included Farhan Alam, Kiran Amin, Nafees Qamar, Sanober Ahmed and Awab Farhat.
Presented in both Urdu and English, the 90-minute play is set in a lively TOEFL classroom where students from different backgrounds struggle with language learning while attempting to build confidence and communicate effectively.
Through humorous misunderstandings and emotionally engaging moments, the production explores the challenges of language barriers, self-expression and personal confidence.
The play also highlights themes of friendship, communication and the importance of embracing individuality.
The audience remained engaged throughout the performance and praised the cast for their energetic and convincing portrayals.
English Only ultimately explores the courage to learn, express oneself and develop an individual voice, while using comedy and drama to address the challenges faced by people learning a new language.
