KARACHI: Zong has partnered with WWF Pakistan and Integrated Waste Management Solution to conduct a coastal clean-up drive at HawksBay, Karachi, as part of the global Plastic Free July campaign.
The initiative brought together company employees, volunteers and environmental advocates to remove plastic waste from the beach, raise awareness about marine pollution and encourage responsible waste disposal.
Organizers said the activity was designed not only to clean the coastline but also to support long-term environmental protection through proper waste segregation, recycling and upcycling.
The waste collected during the drive was transported by Integrated Waste Management Solution for systematic sorting and processing. Recyclable plastic was sent to an upcycling facility, while other materials were handled through appropriate disposal channels.
The approach was aimed at reducing the amount of waste sent to landfill and promoting circular economy practices by converting recyclable materials into reusable resources.

HawksBay is among Karachi’s most prominent coastal areas and faces increasing pressure from plastic waste, unmanaged litter and marine pollution. Environmental groups have repeatedly warned that plastic waste poses a serious threat to marine life, coastal habitats and public health.
Nabila Yazdani, Head of Strategy, Corporate Communications and Sustainability at Zong, said environmental progress required innovation, collaboration and community participation.
“Through our partnership with WWF Pakistan and ISPES, we are advancing responsible waste management, supporting circular economy practices and encouraging collective action to protect Pakistan’s coastal and natural ecosystems,” she said.
Zong said the clean-up was part of its broader environmental sustainability strategy, which includes reducing its ecological footprint, improving resource efficiency and promoting responsible practices across its operations.
The company added that partnerships with environmental organizations and waste-management specialists could help create a more lasting impact than one-off awareness campaigns.
The HawksBay activity concluded Zong’s month-long participation in Plastic Free July, a global campaign encouraging individuals, businesses and institutions to reduce their reliance on single-use plastics.
Organizers said continued collaboration between companies, environmental groups and local communities would be essential to protect Pakistan’s coastline and promote a cleaner, more resilient environment.
