Real Madrid’s Brazilian star Vinicius Jr. has become the subject of an unusual conspiracy theory spreading across social media, with some users bizarrely claiming that the footballer has been replaced by a lookalike or even a clone.
There is no credible evidence supporting the claim.
The theory gained traction after Vinicius made a relatively slow start to the La Liga season, with some social-media users questioning his recent performances compared with his previous form.
His subdued display in Brazil’s 4-0 victory over India also fueled further speculation among conspiracy theorists.
Another point cited by users is an apparent change in Vinicius’ physical appearance following the 2026 World Cup. His jawline appears different in some recent photographs, reportedly after a cosmetic procedure, prompting some users to make increasingly unusual claims about his identity.
Social-media posts have also pointed to alleged differences in the tattoos on his thighs. However, variations in lighting, camera angles, image quality, clothing and the timing of photographs can easily make tattoos appear different from one image to another.
The conspiracy theory has since expanded to include bizarre claims involving aliens and secret organizations. None of these claims has been independently or credibly verified.
Vinicius remains the same Brazilian football star who has established himself as one of Real Madrid’s leading players. The “clone” narrative appears to be another example of how changes in appearance or sporting form can fuel unfounded conspiracy theories online.
