Two young cricketers were killed after unidentified gunmen opened fire during a local cricket match in Mastung, Balochistan, police said. The attackers fled the scene, prompting an investigation and sparking protests by the victims’ families that temporarily blocked the Quetta-Karachi National Highway.
The incident occurred in the Shamsabad Cross area of Mastung, where a cricket match was underway. The attack caused panic among players and spectators and has raised fresh concerns about public safety at sporting events in the region.
Gunfire Interrupts Cricket Match
According to police, unidentified armed men opened fire at the cricket ground during the match, killing two players at the scene. The victims were identified as Ayush and Sagar.
The match was immediately suspended as players, spectators and local residents rushed to safety.
Police Launch Investigation
Police, Levies personnel and other law enforcement agencies reached the scene shortly after the attack. The bodies were shifted to a hospital for legal formalities, while investigators secured the area and began collecting evidence.
Officials said the motive behind the shooting has not yet been established, and investigations are continuing from multiple angles.
Highway Protest Ends After Talks
Following the incident, the victims’ relatives and local residents staged a protest by blocking the Quetta-Karachi National Highway, causing long traffic queues and disrupting travel for several hours.
The protest ended after successful negotiations between the district administration and demonstrators, and traffic on the highway was later restored.
Police said efforts are underway to identify and arrest those responsible for the shooting.
