ISLAMABAD, September 12: Former Pakistan cricket captain Shahid Khan Afridi has criticised the continued rise in petrol prices, saying the increases cannot be attributed solely to global conditions and also reflect shortcomings in government policy and revenue management.
In a statement posted on social media platform X, Afridi said rising petrol prices in Pakistan were placing additional pressure on ordinary citizens already struggling with inflation and higher living costs.
Afridi argued that when the government falls short of its tax collection targets, the burden is often passed on to consumers through higher taxes on fuel.
He said the repeated increases in petrol prices were making everyday expenses more difficult for low- and middle-income households, particularly as transport and food costs tend to rise alongside fuel prices.
Afridi Urges Relief for Public
The former all-rounder said inflation had made it increasingly difficult for many people to meet basic household expenses and urged the government to take steps to provide relief.
He called on authorities to reduce the pressure on consumers and introduce measures that could make daily life more affordable for people already facing financial difficulties.
Afridi’s remarks come amid continued increases in petroleum prices across Pakistan.
According to the figures cited in the report, the price of petrol has risen by Rs30.13 per litre over the past five days, while diesel prices have increased by more than Rs25 per litre during the same period.
