Saadia Zahidi, a Swiss-Pakistani economist and global executive, has been appointed as the next Director General of the International Air Transport Association (IATA), becoming the first woman to lead the organization in its history.
Zahidi will assume office on November 1, 2026, as the ninth Director General of IATA. Her appointment comes at a time when the global aviation industry is navigating rapid technological advances, evolving geopolitical challenges, and the transition toward more sustainable air transport.
Brings extensive global leadership experience
Before joining IATA, Zahidi served as Managing Director and a member of the Managing Board at the World Economic Forum (WEF), where she worked on global economic, workforce, and competitiveness initiatives.
IATA’s Board of Directors approved her appointment following a recommendation from the association’s leadership.
IATA chairman welcomes appointment
Roberto Alvo, Chair of the IATA Board of Directors and Chief Executive Officer of LATAM Airlines Group, said the board was pleased to appoint Zahidi as the organization’s next Director General.
He said her extensive international leadership experience at the World Economic Forum would strengthen IATA’s role as the global voice of the airline industry. Alvo added that her appointment comes during a period of significant transformation driven by technological innovation and geopolitical change, making her well-positioned to represent the sector’s evolving priorities.

Academic background
Saadia Zahidi holds a Bachelor’s degree in Economics from Smith College, an MPhil in International Economics from the Graduate Institute, and a Master of Public Administration from Harvard University.
