ISLAMABAD, May 5 — The Pakistan Red Crescent Society organized a “Climate Champion” event in Islamabad to promote environmental awareness and encourage practical action on climate change, bringing together students, volunteers, and international partners.
The event, held as part of Red Cross and Red Crescent Week, aimed to engage youth in climate-friendly practices through interactive activities focused on reducing emissions, limiting plastic use, and promoting sustainable living.
Youth engagement and awareness activities
Students and participants took part in art and painting activities, using public spaces to highlight environmental challenges and the need for climate action. Awareness sessions focused on reducing plastic consumption, while a theatre performance presented everyday actions to protect the environment.
A “Green Market” initiative allowed participants to exchange recyclable waste for tokens, encouraging reuse and recycling. The activity was designed to promote responsible consumption and practical environmental solutions.
Participation and international support
The event was attended by PRCS Chairperson Farzhana Naek and Secretary General Muhammad Abaidullah Khan, along with representatives from partner organizations including the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, International Committee of the Red Cross, Turkish Red Crescent, Norwegian Red Cross, and German Red Cross.
A large number of students and volunteers from Islamabad and Rawalpindi participated, reflecting growing engagement in climate-related initiatives.
Promoting sustainable practices
The event also included a cycling activity and a symbolic walk to highlight environmentally friendly lifestyles. Organizers emphasized the principles of reducing waste, reusing materials, and recycling as part of everyday practices.
Addressing participants, Farzhana Naek highlighted the importance of collective efforts to tackle climate change, stressing the need to reduce carbon emissions and limit plastic use.
Tree plantation drive
The event concluded with a tree plantation drive at the PRCS premises, where fruit-bearing and shade trees were planted to promote a greener environment and long-term sustainability.
