SWAT: A two-day international seminar on “Research in the Medical Field” was held at Saidu Medical College, Swat, bringing together medical experts, professors, researchers, doctors and students from Pakistan and several other countries.
Among the speakers were UK-based consultant endocrinologist Dr Khawaja Nizamuddin, Prof Dr Israr-ul-Haq, Prof Dr Naeemullah, Italy’s Prof Guido and Dr Wajeeh, along with other medical experts. They delivered lectures covering various aspects of medical research and its role in improving healthcare.
The speakers said medical research is essential for identifying emerging diseases, developing effective treatments and addressing complex public health challenges. They stressed the need to establish a stronger research culture in medical colleges and universities across Pakistan.
The experts recommended introducing medical students to research from their first year. They said students should receive early training in research principles, methodology, scientific literature, data collection and analysis.
They emphasized that medical research should not remain limited to postgraduate students and senior doctors, but should become an integral part of medical education from the earliest stages.
The speakers also called for stronger collaboration between medical colleges, universities, teaching hospitals and international research institutions. They said Pakistan should promote locally relevant research focusing on diseases, malnutrition, epidemics, public health and other healthcare challenges.
The participation of international experts was described as an important opportunity to strengthen academic and research partnerships between Pakistan and institutions abroad.
The seminar concluded with a consensus that research, innovation and evidence-based medical practice are essential for advancing healthcare in Pakistan.
