Rawalpindi, April 30, 2026: Pakistan Navy commissioned its first Hangor-class submarine, PNS/M Hangor, in China on Wednesday, marking a major step in strengthening the country’s maritime defence and naval modernisation.

The commissioning ceremony was held in Sanya and attended by President Asif Ali Zardari as chief guest, along with Chief of the Naval Staff Admiral Naveed Ashraf. Officials said the induction enhances Pakistan’s ability to secure vital sea routes and protect its maritime interests.

Capability and strategic role

According to the military’s media wing, the Hangor-class submarine is equipped with advanced weapons systems, modern sensors and air-independent propulsion technology, enabling extended underwater endurance and improved operational effectiveness.

Naval leadership highlighted that evolving threats to global trade and energy routes make advanced naval platforms essential. The submarine is expected to support deterrence and ensure the security of key sea lines of communication across the Arabian Sea and the wider Indian Ocean region.

Legacy and defence cooperation

Officials noted that the name Hangor carries historic significance, referencing the Pakistan Navy submarine that sank an enemy warship during the 1971 conflict.

The development also reflects ongoing defence cooperation between Pakistan and China, with senior naval officials from both countries attending the ceremony.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and senior military leadership, including the army chief, congratulated the navy on the commissioning, describing it as a key milestone in strengthening maritime security.
