Niu Lai’ Turns Ridicule Into Box-Office Gold

A little-known Chinese animated film that was mocked online for its crude animation and unconventional storytelling has turned into an unlikely box-office sensation.

Niu Lai, translated as The Cow Is Coming, was made by a mother-and-son team, Xin Yumeng and Sun Lifang, over roughly five years with extremely limited resources. The 86-minute film had virtually no conventional promotional campaign or pre-release publicity.

The film was released in China on August 5 and initially appeared destined to disappear from cinemas. During its first 10 days, it reportedly earned only around 7,700 yuan, with fewer than 300 tickets sold nationwide.

From online ridicule to viral success

The film’s fortunes changed after clips from the movie began circulating on social media.

Viewers mocked its crude visuals, unusual animation and unconventional story, but the criticism unexpectedly created curiosity. People began visiting cinemas simply to see whether the film was really as unusual as social media suggested.

That “so bad it’s good” reaction turned negative publicity into free promotion and triggered a dramatic surge in ticket sales.

According to box-office tracking cited in recent reports, Niu Lai had crossed 14.9 million yuan in cumulative earnings by August 17, putting the tiny production among China’s stronger-performing films of the year.

Outperforming blockbusters on some days

The film’s most surprising achievement has been its performance in daily box-office rankings.

Niu Lai has temporarily moved ahead of major releases such as Spider-Man: Brand New Day and The Odyssey in China’s daily ticket-sales rankings. However, this does not mean the film has earned more overall than those blockbusters.

For comparison, The Odyssey reportedly opened in China with about 192 million yuan over its first three official days, vastly exceeding Niu Lai‘s cumulative total.

A film made outside the traditional system

Niu Lai stands out because its success did not come from a major studio, expensive marketing campaign or star cast.

The film was reportedly made almost entirely by its two creators, who handled multiple aspects of the production. Its rough visual style has even attracted some viewers who see the handmade quality as an alternative to increasingly AI-driven entertainment.

The film’s distributor reportedly faced doubts about releasing it because of its quality, but went ahead with the project.

Its unexpected success has now sparked discussion about the power of internet memes, curiosity and negative publicity to transform an obscure film into a box-office phenomenon.
