Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi was conferred the Speaker of the Knesset Medal, described as Israel’s highest parliamentary honour, during his address to the Knesset on February 26. The recognition was presented in acknowledgment of his role in strengthening bilateral ties between India and Israel.
The medal was awarded by Knesset Speaker Amir Ohana following Modi’s speech in the Israeli Parliament. According to the Times of India, the honour recognises his leadership in advancing strategic cooperation and deepening diplomatic engagement between the two countries.
Recognition of India–Israel ties
The Speaker of the Knesset Medal is regarded as the highest distinction conferred by Israel’s parliament. Modi is reported to be the first Indian prime minister to receive the honour.
In a message shared after the ceremony, Modi said the award was not a tribute to an individual but to the enduring friendship between India and Israel. He described it as a reflection of shared democratic values and growing cooperation.
India and Israel have expanded collaboration in recent years across sectors including defence, agriculture, technology, innovation and trade. Modi’s visit marked his second official trip to Israel as prime minister.
Previous international honours
Modi had earlier received the Grand Collar of the State of Palestine in 2018, the highest Palestinian honour for foreign leaders. With the latest recognition from Israel’s parliament, he becomes one of the few global leaders to have been honoured by both Israel and Palestine.
During his visit, Modi held talks with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, focusing on bilateral relations and regional security issues.
