Two people have died from suffocation during celebrations in Mexico City after Mexico’s football team secured a 2-0 victory over Ecuador in the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 16 qualification match.

According to local authorities, the victims—a 19-year-old woman and a 44-year-old man—lost their lives due to crowd pressure and lack of oxygen as thousands gathered in central Mexico City to celebrate the win, particularly around the Angel of Independence monument.

The incident occurred after Mexico defeated Ecuador 2-0, securing a place in the Round of 16. The victory sparked massive celebrations across the city, with large crowds flooding streets and public squares.

Officials said an investigation into the incident is underway. Some local media reports also suggested a possible third fatality, but this has not yet been officially confirmed.

Mexico’s team has had a strong World Cup run so far, winning all four of their matches without conceding a goal and scoring eight in total.

The team’s knockout-stage victory over Ecuador marks their first win in a World Cup knockout match in 40 years, adding historic significance to their campaign.

Mexico will next face the winner of the match between England and the Democratic Republic of Congo in the Round of 16 on July 5, 2026, at Mexico City Stadium.
