CM Maryam Nawaz announces Rs23bn Katcha development package for Punjab

LAHORE, Pakistan: Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has announced a Rs23 billion development package for Katcha areas, focusing on infrastructure, public services, and law and order in riverine regions.

The initiative aims to improve living conditions in underserved areas by expanding access to education, healthcare, transport, and security, while also supporting livelihoods through land allocation and development schemes.

Alongside the package, the chief minister launched the “Apna Khet, Apna Rozgar” programme, under which 14,500 acres of government land will be distributed to local residents.

Under the Katcha Area Development Programme, the government plans to build and upgrade schools, hospitals, roads, and bridges, while introducing transport services and mobile healthcare units, including clinics on wheels.

Mobile veterinary hospitals and laboratories will also be deployed to support livestock and rural livelihoods.

Security and infrastructure measures

A significant portion of the package has been allocated to strengthening law enforcement. Authorities will deploy solar-powered drone surveillance with extended flight capability, along with modern armoured personnel carriers and police vehicles equipped with cameras.

Police stations and check posts in Katcha areas will be integrated with the Safe City monitoring system to improve coordination and response.

According to official allocations, Rs7.1 billion will be spent on law and order, Rs13.9 billion on social infrastructure, and Rs1.7 billion on other initiatives.

Education, development, and services

In the education sector, 6,551 female students will receive meal packs, while 300 students will be awarded scholarships and another 300 laptops.

The plan includes construction and rehabilitation of 65 schools, establishment of 16 new schools, and two girls’ colleges.

Development work will cover 108 kilometres of road soling and completion of 27 schemes spanning 144 kilometres.

Additional initiatives include model village projects featuring sewerage, drainage, and sports facilities, along with a Rs125 million skills development programme.

Authorities will also introduce NADRA services in the region to facilitate CNIC and B-form registration for residents.

Officials said a special allowance has been approved for personnel deployed in Katcha areas, while measures are being taken to monitor illegal weapons and improve security, including restrictions on tall crop cultivation along main roads.
