NEW DELHI: Veteran Bollywood actor Madhuri Dixit has spoken about the pressures of appearance-based judgment in the entertainment industry, saying that ageism and gender bias continue to affect how women are perceived both on and off screen.
Speaking about changing beauty standards, Madhuri Dixit said actresses often face unnecessary scrutiny over their appearance regardless of their age or professional achievements. She noted that public conversations frequently focus on physical changes rather than an individual’s work, experiences, or contributions.
The actor said comments about weight gain, aging, or gray hair are common and often overlook the personal and professional journeys people go through over time. She emphasized the importance of accepting individuals as they are rather than making their appearance a subject of criticism.
Reflecting on career choices
Discussing her recent work, Madhuri said she has enjoyed taking on a variety of roles and exploring different genres. While many of her recent projects have been serious in tone, she chose to work on a comedy film this time to experience a different style of storytelling.
Supporting emerging talent
Madhuri will also appear alongside newcomer Dharna Durga in the upcoming film. She said she made a conscious effort to help the young actor feel comfortable and confident during filming.
According to Madhuri, Dharna became emotional when they first met and expressed concerns about her ability to perform. Madhuri said she encouraged her co-star and reassured her that they would work together to deliver their best on set.
