NEW DELHI: Kareena Kapoor Khan and Malayalam star Prithviraj Sukumaran’s crime thriller Daira has opened to a modest response at the Indian box office, earning an estimated ₹85 lakh on its first day, according to early trade figures cited in the report.
Directed by Meghna Gulzar, the film revolves around two police officers caught in a moral conflict following a controversial encounter linked to a rape and murder case. Daira was released simultaneously in Hindi and Malayalam.
The Hindi version accounted for the overwhelming majority of the film’s opening-day earnings, collecting around ₹82 lakh, while the Malayalam version contributed approximately ₹3 lakh.
Lowest opening among Kareena Kapoor’s recent films
The opening is also notable in Kareena Kapoor Khan’s recent filmography. According to the reported figures, Daira has recorded a lower first-day India collection than The Buckingham Murders, which earned approximately ₹1.15 crore on its opening day in 2024.
The Buckingham Murders, directed by Hansal Mehta, had previously registered the lowest first-day collection among Kapoor’s recent releases.
The initial box-office figures for Daira, however, represent only the film’s opening day. Its overall theatrical performance will depend on audience response, occupancy and collections over the following days.
The film brings together Kapoor and Prithviraj in a crime thriller built around questions of policing, justice and moral responsibility.
