Iranian Envoy Calls for Stronger Regional Engagement at IRS Dialogue in Islamabad

ISLAMABAD: Iranian Ambassador to Pakistan Dr. Reza Amiri Moghaddam has appreciated Pakistan’s solidarity with Iran and called for stronger regional engagement to promote peace and stability in West Asia.

He was speaking at a policy dialogue organized by the Institute of Regional Studies (IRS), Islamabad, titled “Pakistan’s Role in Building Regional Peace: Iran’s Strategic Posture, Regional Alignments, and Pathways to Stability.” The discussion focused on Iran’s strategic posture, changing regional alignments, the impact of the recent Iran-Israel conflict, and Pakistan’s role in supporting diplomacy and conflict prevention.

Addressing the dialogue, Dr. Moghaddam said Iran valued the support shown by the government and people of Pakistan during the recent conflict. He described unified leadership, national cohesion, strategic geography and an indigenous defence industrial base as key elements of Iran’s deterrence posture.

The Iranian envoy also stressed the need for closer cooperation among Pakistan, Iran, Türkiye, Saudi Arabia and Egypt to advance regional peace, stability and shared prosperity. He reaffirmed Iran’s commitment to dialogue and diplomacy as a path to resolving regional challenges.

Pakistan’s role in West Asia discussed

IRS President Ambassador Jauhar Saleem said Iran’s strategic posture remains an important factor in the security landscape of West Asia. He said a clear understanding of Iran’s security priorities is necessary for assessing regional stability, energy security and diplomatic opportunities.

He added that the dialogue was relevant for Pakistan because developments in West Asia affect border security, regional connectivity, energy cooperation, maritime interests and Pakistan’s wider engagement with the region.

Former Ambassador of Pakistan to Iran Asif Ali Khan Durrani said West Asia was passing through a strategic turning point, with major questions about the regional order still unresolved.

He proposed a six-point framework for a cooperative regional security architecture based on sovereignty, non-interference, institutionalized dialogue, collective maritime security, economic integration and counterterrorism cooperation.

Ms. Zohreh Shahbeik, First Counsellor at the Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran, also appreciated Pakistan’s constructive role in supporting peace dialogue and regional stability. She said sustained engagement, mutual respect and understanding were important for addressing shared challenges and strengthening Pakistan-Iran relations.

Media’s role in regional conflicts highlighted

Abu Baker Younis Matar, Bureau Chief of Pakistan Al Mayadeen TV, discussed the role of regional media in shaping public understanding of conflicts in Gaza, Lebanon and Iran.

He said the Palestinian issue remains a central factor in regional instability and emphasized the importance of sustained and balanced media coverage of conflicts in the region.

The policy dialogue concluded with an interactive exchange on the prospects for a cooperative security framework in West Asia. Participants underscored the importance of diplomacy, regional cooperation and inclusive dialogue in reducing tensions, promoting connectivity and supporting long-term stability.
