LAHORE, April 20 — The Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission has designated the Institute of Nuclear Medicine and Oncology (INMOL) in Lahore as an International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Collaborating Centre, formally presenting the plaque at a ceremony held on Saturday.

The designation, confirmed through an agreement signed in Vienna on February 16, 2026, with the International Atomic Energy Agency, highlights Pakistan’s expanding role in cancer care, research, and the peaceful use of nuclear technology.

INMOL joins global cancer care network

As an IAEA Collaborating Centre, INMOL will contribute to international efforts in cancer diagnosis, treatment, training, and research through technical cooperation and capacity-building initiatives.

Officials said the recognition reflects growing international confidence in Pakistan’s capabilities in nuclear medicine and oncology services.

New facilities to enhance treatment capacity

During the ceremony, a state-of-the-art TrueBeam HyperArc Linear Accelerator (LINAC) was inaugurated to improve advanced radiotherapy services.

A new chemotherapy bay was also opened, increasing patient capacity from 20 to 50, aimed at expanding access to treatment.

Pakistan expands presence in IAEA network

With INMOL’s inclusion, Pakistan now has five institutions designated as IAEA Collaborating Centres.

These include the Pakistan Institute of Engineering and Applied Sciences (PIEAS), National Institute of Safety and Security (NISAS), Nuclear Institute for Agriculture and Biology (NIAB), and Pakistan Institute of Nuclear Science and Technology (PINSTECH).

Key role in national cancer care

INMOL treats more than 150,000 patients annually, providing radiotherapy, chemotherapy, and nuclear medicine services at subsidized costs.

It is part of a wider network of 21 atomic energy cancer hospitals across Pakistan, which collectively serve over one million patients each year.
