An Indonesian man has been arrested after allegedly killing his neighbor in North Sumatra, telling police he was driven by repeated remarks about his unmarried status, according to local authorities.
The incident occurred on July 29 in South Tapanuli Regency, where 45-year-old Parlindungan Siregar is accused of fatally attacking his 60-year-old neighbor, Asgim Irianto, a retired civil servant. Police said the suspect allegedly targeted the victim after becoming increasingly upset by repeated jokes about why he was still unmarried.
Attack Followed Long-Running Tensions
According to Assistant Police Commissioner Maria Marpaung, the suspect allegedly arrived at the victim’s home carrying a piece of wood and attacked him without warning.
Police said the victim fled into the street but was chased by the suspect, who allegedly struck him on the head before continuing the assault after he fell. Local residents intervened and rushed the victim to a hospital, but he died before receiving treatment.
Authorities arrested the suspect within an hour of the attack.
Suspect Cites Repeated Remarks
During police questioning, the suspect allegedly said he intended to kill his neighbor because he was deeply hurt by the victim’s repeated jokes asking why he had not married at the age of 45.
Police also said the two neighbors had reportedly argued on previous occasions over disputes involving their chickens, suggesting there had been earlier tensions between them.
The investigation into the case is ongoing.
