A giant model of Syrax, the dragon from HBO’s fantasy series House of the Dragon, was seen flying over Glasgow ahead of the opening ceremony of the 2026 Commonwealth Games.
The highly realistic dragon flew above the River Clyde and passed landmarks including the SEC Armadillo and OVO Hydro, surprising residents and prompting videos of the spectacle to spread widely across social media.
The display took place before the Commonwealth Games opening ceremony at the OVO Hydro on Thursday, July 23, 2026. The publicity stunt was also designed to promote the upcoming third season of House of the Dragon.
Eight-Metre Dragon Model Takes to the Skies
The Syrax dragon flying over Glasgow was not created through digital effects. It was an eight-metre-long physical flying model based on Rhaenyra Targaryen’s dragon from the television series.
The model was produced using three-dimensional scans connected to the show, allowing its makers to recreate the dragon’s appearance with realistic details and lifelike movement.
Reports said the model weighed around 13 kilograms and included 23 moving components, including wings, rudders and propellers. A 14-member team spent nearly 3,000 hours building the airborne replica.
Viral Videos Surprise Glasgow Residents
People gathered near the River Clyde filmed the dragon as it circled above the city, with many clips quickly gaining attention online.
From a distance, the movement of its wings and body made it appear as though a creature from the fantasy series had entered the real-world Glasgow skyline.
The spectacle linked entertainment promotion with celebrations surrounding the return of the Commonwealth Games to Glasgow.
The 2026 Games are scheduled to run from July 23 to August 2, with athletes from Commonwealth nations competing across multiple sporting events in the Scottish city.
