KARACHI: The federal government will hand over the Green Line bus service to the Sindh government in December 2024. The Sindh government has completed preparations to take over operations on the Line of Demarcation, a communique said on Friday. A high level meeting was held in Karachi chaired by Sindh Chief Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon. The meeting was attended by Transport Minister Asad Zamin, Sindh Mass Transport Authority Director General Kamal Hakeem Dayo, Trans Karachi Director General Shumaila Mohsin and other officials. In the meeting, the operation of the Green Line bus route was thoroughly reviewed and Sindh Chief Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon received comprehensive information about the Green Line project. The plan to connect the Green Line with the Orange Line project was also discussed in detail. During the meeting, Sharjeel Inam Memon directed the speedy completion of the project to link the Green Line with the Orange Line. The meeting also covered discussions on the ongoing operations of the Sindh government in the public transport sector, public services and green line subsidy. Speaking at the meeting, Sindh Chief Minister and Provincial Minister for Information, Transport, Mass Transport, Excise, Taxation and Narcotics Control emphasized that the Green Line project is an important part of Karachi’s public transport system. He confirmed that the Green Line project will be transferred by the federal government to the Sindh government in December 2024. He said the Sindh government aims to complete the project connecting the Green Line with the Orange Line by December 2024. He noted that the federal government currently provides an annual subsidy of 2 billion rupees for the operation of the green line, which the Sindh government will review. After the transfer of the Green Line project from the Federal Government to the Sindh Government, more buses will be introduced to increase the efficiency and quality of transport services for the citizens. He further said that the public has experienced considerable relief due to the ongoing public transport projects initiated by the Sindh government. Public transport has been a long-standing problem in Karachi and we aim to improve the system as much as possible to provide maximum convenience and relief to the citizens.
