A fake AI-generated video circulating on social media falsely claimed that former Pakistan fast bowler Wasim Akram had died of a heart attack, using the voice and likeness of former cricketer Shoaib Akhtar.
The video quickly went viral, causing confusion and concern among fans before it was confirmed to be entirely fabricated. The clip was designed to mimic Shoaib Akhtar’s voice and facial expressions, presenting the false claim as breaking news.
The misinformation was later debunked when Wasim Akram’s wife, Shaniera Akram, responded by sharing a recent video of the cricket legend working out at the gym. Her post confirmed that Wasim Akram is alive and in good health, dismissing the viral claims.
Following her clarification, the rumours were widely rejected across social media. However, the incident has reignited debate over the misuse of artificial intelligence and the rapid spread of deepfake content online.
Users strongly criticised the creators of the fake video, calling it irresponsible and harmful. They said such fabricated content not only misleads the public but also causes unnecessary distress to families, friends, and fans of public figures.
