Egypt Denied First World Cup Win as Belgium Rescue 1-1 Draw in Seattle

Egypt came close to securing their first FIFA World Cup victory before a second-half own goal helped Belgium earn a 1-1 draw in their Group G match in Seattle.

The result gave Egypt one point against a strong European opponent, but it also extended their wait for a first World Cup win since their tournament debut in 1934.

Egypt started the match with attacking intent and took the lead in the 21st minute through midfielder Emam Ashour. He struck a powerful shot from around 20 yards that beat Belgium goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois and went into the net.

Egypt had chances to increase their lead before halftime, but Courtois made important saves to keep Belgium in the match.

Captain Mohamed Salah also came close in the second half with a dangerous header, but Courtois again responded well to deny Egypt a second goal.

Belgium increased pressure after head coach Rudi Garcia introduced Romelu Lukaku in the 66th minute. Soon after Lukaku’s arrival, Thomas Meunier sent a ball into the area, and Egypt defender Mohamed Hany, under pressure, turned it into his own net.

Belgium had earlier threatened through Kevin De Bruyne, whose free kick struck the post as the European side pushed for an equalizer.

A large number of Egyptian supporters in Seattle backed their team throughout the match, but the seven-time African champions were unable to hold on for a historic win.

Egypt have now gone eight World Cup matches without a victory, but the draw gave them a valuable point in Group G.
