Pakistan’s young fast bowler Razaullah made an immediate impact on his Test debut against England, taking four wickets in the first innings after dismissing England captain Joe Root with the fourth ball of his opening over.
His Test debut capped a rapid rise for the pacer, whose journey from Upper Dir to international cricket has been shaped by hard work, family support and opportunities at key stages of his career.
From Upper Dir to domestic cricket
Razaullah moved to Mardan with his brothers during his childhood after they recognized his strong interest in cricket. His family encouraged him to pursue the sport, giving him the opportunity to develop his bowling.
His performances eventually brought him to the attention of selectors, earning him a place in the National T20 Cup. His pace stood out during the tournament and helped establish him as a promising young fast bowler.
Razaullah has long admired former Pakistan fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar and aspired to bowl at similar speeds. During the National T20 Cup, he reportedly insisted on receiving Akhtar’s famous number 14 jersey from a team official. His teammates subsequently began calling him “Shobi.”
PSL opportunity accelerates his progress
During a tournament in Quetta, former Pakistan coach Abdul Rehman reportedly identified Razaullah’s potential. Working with Abbottabad coach Ahmed Syed, he helped facilitate the pacer’s selection for the Peshawar-based PSL team earlier this year.
Coaches advised Razaullah to control his aggressive approach while continuing to develop his natural pace and attacking style.
An unexpected Test call-up
Razaullah’s opportunity to travel to England came unexpectedly. According to the report, he did not even have a passport when selectors attempted to contact him about his selection for the Pakistan squad.
His phone was reportedly switched off, prompting a coach to travel to his village to locate him. Arrangements for his passport and visa were then made on an urgent basis.
After reaching England, Razaullah was not merely added to the squad but was named in Pakistan’s playing XI for the Test.
Four wickets on Test debut
Razaullah announced himself immediately. With the ball in hand, he dismissed Joe Root lbw with the fourth delivery of his first over.
He went on to claim three more wickets, finishing the innings with four wickets and giving Pakistan an impressive glimpse of a fast bowler who had only recently emerged from the domestic circuit.
