Saudi Arabia and Uruguay played out a 1-1 draw in their FIFA World Cup 2026 Group H match in Miami after Uruguay scored late to deny Saudi Arabia a notable victory.
The result left both teams with one point and kept the Group H qualification race open, with Saudi Arabia coming close to another major World Cup upset before Uruguay responded in the closing stages.
Saudi Arabia took the lead in the first half through Abdullah Al-Amri. The goal came after a header from a corner was initially stopped by Uruguay goalkeeper Fernando Muslera, but the rebound eventually crossed the line.
Saudi Arabia defended strongly for much of the first half and looked to repeat the kind of surprise result they produced at the 2022 World Cup, when they defeated Argentina.
Uruguay changed their approach in the second half under head coach Marcelo Bielsa, who made key substitutions, including replacing striker Darwin Núñez, in an attempt to increase the team’s pace and attacking pressure.
The changes helped Uruguay push forward, but Saudi goalkeeper Mohammed Al-Owais made several important saves to keep his team ahead.
Uruguay’s pressure finally produced an equalizer near the 80th minute when Maxi Araújo reacted to a rebound and sent the ball into the net.
Uruguay continued to attack in the final minutes, with Federico Valverde also testing the Saudi defence, but Al-Owais made another strong save to keep the score level.
The match ended 1-1, giving both teams a point and adding further competition to the Group H standings.
