NEW YORK: Acclaimed filmmaker Christopher Nolan drew attention on the red carpet at the New York premiere of his upcoming film The Odyssey—not only for the film itself, but for an accessory inspired by Sindh’s traditional Ajrak textile.

Known for his understated style, Nolan paired his classic suit with a custom silk tie featuring Ajrak-inspired patterns. The distinctive design quickly gained traction on social media, with many users celebrating the appearance of Sindh’s cultural heritage at a major international film event.

The tie was designed by Ahan Tandon, a student at Parsons School of Design.

The appearance came shortly after Nolan visited India as part of the promotional campaign for The Odyssey, accompanied by lead actors Matt Damon and Tom Holland. While the India visit marked the first official premiere of a Nolan film in the country, it was his Ajrak-inspired tie at the New York premiere that became a talking point online.

Social Media Celebrates Sindh’s Heritage

Pakistani fashion writer Mah Rukh shared Nolan’s photograph on Instagram, asking whether the accessory was an Ajrak tie. Her post sparked widespread discussion about the cultural significance, history, and craftsmanship of the traditional Sindhi textile.

Many users described the tie as an example of how traditional South Asian craftsmanship can gain visibility through contemporary fashion.

A Symbol of Sindhi Craftsmanship

Ajrak is regarded as one of Sindh’s most recognizable cultural traditions, known for its intricate hand block-printing techniques and natural dyes. The centuries-old textile is traditionally produced in areas including Hala, Bhit Shah, and Khairpur, with similar craft traditions also found in parts of Gujarat and Rajasthan.

Artisans create Ajrak through a labor-intensive process involving repeated washing, natural dyeing, and hand-printing with carved wooden blocks. Slight variations in each piece are considered a hallmark of authentic craftsmanship.

Fashion experts say the growing popularity of “quiet luxury”—which emphasizes quality, heritage, and craftsmanship over visible branding—has helped traditional textiles such as Ajrak gain renewed international appreciation.

Meanwhile, The Odyssey is based on Homer’s ancient Greek epic poem and stars Matt Damon as Odysseus, alongside Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, and Charlize Theron.
