SHENZHEN: BYD has released official teaser images of its upcoming flagship electric sedan, the Seal 08, confirming a global debut on March 5. The model represents the production evolution of the Ocean-S concept and will headline the company’s premium Ocean 8 lineup.

The BYD Seal 08 enters the executive EV segment with an 800-volt architecture, advanced driver-assistance hardware and a claimed driving range exceeding 1,000 kilometres under China’s CLTC standard. The launch marks BYD’s latest move to strengthen its position in the high-end electric sedan market.

Design and advanced driver systems

The Seal 08 adopts BYD’s “Ocean Aesthetic 2.0” design language, featuring a low-slung front profile, slim LED headlamps and curved daytime running lights. Teaser images confirm a roof-mounted LiDAR sensor, indicating support for the company’s God’s Eye 5.0 (DiPilot 300) intelligent driving system.

Unlike the earlier Ocean-S concept, which showcased camera mirrors and rear-hinged doors, the production model uses conventional side mirrors and semi-hidden door handles. A full-width LED light bar with a wave-inspired pattern defines the rear styling.

800V platform and fast charging

The sedan is built on an 800V high-voltage platform and is expected to support BYD’s “Megawatt Flash Charging” technology. The charging network, rated at up to 1,500 kW, is currently being deployed across China.

BYD says the second-generation Blade battery (Blade 2.0) can add approximately 400 kilometres of driving range in five minutes under ideal conditions. The top variant is expected to deliver more than 1,000 kilometres of range based on CLTC testing.

Dimensions and chassis technology

The Seal 08 measures just over five metres in length, with an estimated wheelbase of 2,950 mm. Rear-wheel steering is included to improve manoeuvrability despite its large footprint.

The sedan also features BYD’s DiSus-C intelligent damping control system, designed to enhance ride comfort and stability.

Competitive positioning

The Seal 08 establishes the Ocean 8 series as the highest-tier range within BYD’s Ocean portfolio, mirroring the company’s Dynasty-branded premium models such as the Han and Tang.

It is expected to compete directly with premium electric sedans including the Xiaomi SU7. The SU7 currently starts at 229,900 yuan (around $33,400), positioning the Seal 08 within a competitive price band if similarly targeted.

Production is expected to be centred at BYD’s high-end manufacturing facilities, with a focus on both domestic Chinese demand and global export markets.

More technical specifications and pricing details are likely to be announced at the March 5 debut event.
