Ahmed Shehzad Criticises Babar Azam’s Return as Pakistan Captain
Former Pakistan opener Ahmed Shehzad has criticised the decision to reappoint Babar Azam as captain, questioning both the timing of the move and its potential impact on the national team’s performance.
Speaking to a private television channel, Shehzad said he believes the decision was not in Pakistan cricket’s best interests. He argued that Babar had already served as captain previously and that his tenure had not delivered the desired results.
Questions Raised Over Form and Leadership
Shehzad said Babar Azam’s batting form had come under scrutiny in recent months, claiming the batter had scored around 550 runs across his last 30 to 32 innings.
He also noted that concerns had previously been raised about captaincy affecting Babar’s batting performance. Despite those discussions, Shehzad said Babar had accepted the leadership role once again.
Shehzad further claimed that the Pakistan captaincy comes with influence, responsibilities and additional privileges, suggesting these factors may have contributed to Babar’s willingness to return as skipper.
Rashid Latif Urges Focus on Test Cricket
Former Pakistan captain Rashid Latif also commented on the team’s immediate priorities, saying Pakistan’s upcoming schedule is focused on Test cricket rather than T20 internationals.
He said Babar Azam should concentrate on performing well in the upcoming two-Test series against Bangladesh and the subsequent Test matches against the West Indies.
Latif added that Pakistan should focus on improving its standing in the ICC World Test Championship and aim to qualify for the tournament final through strong performances in the longer format.
