ISLAMABAD, Jun 16 (ABC):Pakistan has secured approval for 174 fish processing plants to export seafood products to China, a move that broadens access to one of the country’s largest export markets. The development is significant for Pakistan’s fisheries sector, which supports thousands of livelihoods and contributes to agricultural output and export earnings.
What has changed?
The General Administration of Customs of China has enlisted 174 Pakistani fish processing plants under approved regulatory arrangements. This registration allows a larger number of Pakistani exporters to supply seafood products to the Chinese market while meeting Chinese import requirements.
The expansion comes as agricultural and food trade between Pakistan and China continues to grow. China has become an increasingly important destination for Pakistani seafood exports, including fish, shrimp and other marine products.
Why does it matter?
Access to international markets is a key factor in the growth of Pakistan’s fisheries industry. Approval from importing countries enables seafood exporters to sell products abroad under recognized food safety and regulatory standards.
The latest enlistment increases the number of Pakistani facilities eligible to export to China, potentially creating new opportunities for seafood processors, exporters and fishing communities.
The development also strengthens trade links between Pakistan and China, which is already one of Pakistan’s largest trading partners.
How is Pakistan performing in seafood exports?
Pakistan has recently expanded its presence in several international seafood markets.
Following the resumption of seafood exports to the European Union, consignments of fish, cuttlefish and shrimp exported by four Pakistani companies successfully met all laboratory testing requirements at EU border inspection points.
According to official records, 11 Pakistani fish processing facilities are currently registered for exports to Saudi Arabia. Registration of 16 additional facilities for exports to Russia is also under process.
These developments indicate ongoing efforts to diversify export destinations beyond traditional markets.
What role does fisheries play in Pakistan’s economy?
The fisheries sector is an important part of Pakistan’s agricultural economy. It provides employment and income opportunities, particularly in coastal regions where marine fishing is a major economic activity.
Fishing activities also take place in inland waters, including rivers, lakes, ponds and dams across the country.
Official data shows that fisheries contribute 1.29 percent to the agriculture sector and 0.30 percent to Pakistan’s gross domestic product (GDP).
During July–March of fiscal year 2025-26, total fish production reached 642,180 metric tonnes. Of this amount, 427,180 metric tonnes came from marine fisheries, while 215,000 metric tonnes were produced from inland water resources.
What steps are authorities taking to support the sector?
Federal and provincial fisheries departments are implementing several measures aimed at improving productivity and increasing exports.
These initiatives include expanding extension services for fishermen, promoting modern fishing techniques, developing value-added seafood products, encouraging fish consumption and improving the socio-economic conditions of fishing communities.
Authorities are also reviewing Pakistan’s Deep-Sea Fishing Policy 2018 to ensure it reflects current industry needs and emerging export opportunities.
What happens next?
The expanded approval for exports to China is expected to support greater participation by Pakistani seafood processors in international trade. At the same time, government agencies continue to pursue market access in other countries and update policies aimed at improving competitiveness, regulatory compliance and export growth in the fisheries sector.
