A viral video claiming to show a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket colliding with the Moon has been debunked, with experts saying the footage is likely AI-generated.
A video circulating on social media appeared to show an object moving rapidly toward the Moon before striking its surface and producing what looked like a white cloud.
However, astronomy experts have determined that the footage is not authentic and may have been generated or manipulated using artificial intelligence.
Experts also pointed out that a ground-based telescope would not be able to capture a roughly 12-metre-long rocket at such a distance in the manner shown in the viral footage.
SpaceX founder Elon Musk has also described the circulating video as fake.
The Lunar Impact Did Happen
While the viral footage is fabricated, the underlying event was real.
A section of a Falcon 9 rocket reportedly struck the Moon on August 5, but no authentic video exists showing the collision in the dramatic manner depicted in the viral clip.
South Korea’s space agency later released images showing the impact site and effects on the lunar surface.
The incident has therefore created a clear distinction between the real lunar impact and the misleading video being circulated online.
Experts have urged social media users to verify sensational space footage before sharing it, particularly as AI-generated videos become increasingly difficult to distinguish from genuine recordings.
