SWAT: The University of Swat has launched a seven-day specialised training programme aimed at strengthening students’ practical knowledge of climate-resilient agriculture, sustainable water management and drought monitoring.

The programme, titled “Building Climate-Resilient Agriculture: Remote Sensing for Sustainable Water Management and Drought Monitoring,” has been organised by the Office of Research, Innovation and Commercialization in collaboration with the university’s Department of Environmental Sciences.

The training will continue until August 2, 2026.

Designed exclusively for students of the Department of Environmental Sciences, the programme focuses on the use of remote sensing and geospatial technologies to assess water resources, monitor drought conditions and support sustainable agricultural planning.

Prof Songhao Shang and Dr Khalil ur Rahman are conducting the sessions and providing participants with practical instruction in the application of modern scientific tools.

University officials said the initiative was part of the institution’s efforts to promote research, innovation and professional capacity-building in environmental sciences.

They said climate change, declining water availability and increasingly frequent drought conditions were creating serious challenges for agriculture and natural-resource management.

The training aims to prepare future environmental professionals to use advanced technologies for evidence-based planning and to develop effective responses to climate-related risks.

Officials added that remote sensing can help researchers and policymakers monitor changes in land, vegetation and water availability over large areas, allowing them to make better-informed decisions about agricultural and environmental management.
