WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump has shared a video clip of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s address to the 81st United Nations General Assembly in which the Pakistani premier thanked him for what he described as a “timely intervention” during the 2025 India-Pakistan military confrontation.
Trump shared the 87-second clip on his social media account without additional commentary. In the video,
Shehbaz Sharif described India’s 2025 military action as “external aggression” and praised Pakistan’s armed forces for their response under the leadership of Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir.
In his UN address, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said Pakistan had exercised its right of self-defence under Article 51 of the UN Charter during the confrontation. He also credited Trump’s intervention with helping prevent further escalation between the two nuclear-armed countries.
Trump had earlier referred to the India-Pakistan conflict during his own address to the 81st UN General Assembly, listing it among conflicts he said his administration had helped settle. India has disputed Trump’s account of mediation, maintaining that the ceasefire understanding was reached through direct communication between the two countries’ military officials.
The latest social media post has drawn attention in Pakistan because of its timing and its sharing of the Pakistani prime minister’s account of the 2025 conflict and the subsequent ceasefire.
