WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump was rushed out of the White House Correspondents’ Dinner on Saturday night after a gunman opened fire near the venue, triggering a major security response before a suspect was taken into custody. The incident disrupted one of Washington’s highest-profile annual gatherings but officials confirmed the president and other senior leaders were unharmed.
The shooting occurred near the main screening area at the Washington Hilton, where attendees had gathered for the event. According to officials, an armed individual fired at a Secret Service agent, who was struck in protective gear and not injured. Authorities said the situation was quickly contained.
Panic inside venue as security intervenes
Witnesses reported confusion and panic inside the ballroom as gunshots were heard, with attendees taking cover under tables. Secret Service agents moved swiftly to secure the hall, surrounding the president and escorting him and First Lady Melania Trump out of the room.
Security personnel in tactical gear entered the venue and established control of the area. Cabinet members and senior officials were also evacuated as a precaution. The event, attended by roughly 2,600 guests, was later cancelled.
Trump said in a post that the suspect had been apprehended and praised the response by law enforcement. He added that the first lady, vice president, and cabinet members were safe.
Investigation underway
The U.S. Secret Service said it is investigating the shooting near the entrance to the event. Officials have not released detailed information about the suspect or a possible motive.
Preliminary reports indicated multiple gunshots were fired, though authorities have yet to confirm an exact sequence of events. A Secret Service agent injured in the incident was protected by body armour and is in stable condition, according to officials.
Security questions emerge
The White House Correspondents’ Dinner is typically held under tight security, with layered screening and a heavy law enforcement presence. The breach has raised questions about how an armed individual approached the screening area.
The Washington Hilton, where the event was held, has historical significance as the site of the 1981 assassination attempt on former President Ronald Reagan.
Authorities said further updates will be provided as the investigation continues.
