MARDAN: Traders’ representatives have called on the Punjab government to immediately remove any restrictions on the supply of wheat and flour to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), expressing concern over reports of disruptions that could affect food availability and prices in the province.

The appeal was made by Zahir Shah during a meeting with representatives of the flour trade and business community, including Haji Waheed, Anwar Hussain Mohmand, and a delegation from Tanzeem Tajiran Peshawar.

Zahir Shah described reports regarding the suspension of wheat supplies from Punjab to KP as a matter of serious concern, warning that any interruption could affect the availability of essential food items and contribute to price instability.

Concerns over food security and inflation

According to the traders’ leader, wheat is a basic food commodity, and restrictions on its movement between provinces could create challenges for consumers and businesses alike.

He said such measures could lead to higher prices, encourage hoarding, and place additional financial pressure on the public. He also stressed that inter-provincial cooperation is essential for maintaining economic stability and ensuring the uninterrupted supply of essential goods.

Call for federal and provincial action

Zahir Shah urged both the Punjab government and the federal government to take immediate notice of the issue and ensure the continued supply of wheat and flour to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Trader organizations also called on relevant institutions and provincial authorities to work together to find a long-term solution that guarantees the free movement of essential commodities across the country.

They said coordinated action would help protect consumers, support business activity, and strengthen trade relations between provinces while preventing potential shortages and market disruptions.
