Switzerland produced a commanding performance in the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 32, defeating Algeria 2-0 to secure a place in the pre-quarterfinal stage.
The result marked a significant milestone for the Swiss side, as it was their first knockout-stage victory at a World Cup since 1938, ending an 88-year wait for success in the elimination rounds.
Strong start sets the tone
Played in Vancouver, Switzerland took control of the match early and maintained pressure throughout the first half. The breakthrough came in the 10th minute when Johan Manzambi set up Breel Embolo, who finished clinically to give his side the lead.
Just 46 seconds into the second half, Dan Ndoye doubled the advantage with a composed finish, putting Switzerland firmly in control of the contest.
Algeria struggle to respond
Algeria attempted to respond in the first half, with their best opportunity falling to Farès Chaïbi, but Swiss goalkeeper Gregor Kobel made a comfortable save to preserve the lead.
After that, Algeria struggled to create meaningful chances as Switzerland managed the game effectively until the final whistle.
Rising young talent shines
Twenty-year-old Johan Manzambi delivered a standout performance, taking his direct goal contributions in the tournament to five. His form places him among the most influential Swiss players in recent World Cup history since 1966.
Switzerland will now face the winner of the Colombia vs Ghana match in the next round.
