Riphah University, Young Journalists Association Hold Seminar on Cybersecurity, AI and Digital Journalism

RAWALPINDI, June 19: Riphah International University and the Young Journalists Association (YJA) jointly organized an awareness seminar focusing on cybersecurity, artificial intelligence (AI) and digital journalism, bringing together academics, journalists, media practitioners and students from across the city.

The seminar, arranged in collaboration with Riphah FM Radio Station, ORIC and YJA, aimed to highlight emerging digital challenges and prepare young journalists for the rapidly evolving media landscape.

Experts highlight rising cyber threats and digital safety

Speaking at the seminar, cybersecurity expert Saeed Najeeb-ul-Hassan warned that cyber threats are becoming increasingly sophisticated. In his session titled “How to Prevent Yourself from Cybercrime,” he stressed the importance of strong passwords, two-factor authentication and caution while sharing personal data online.

Professor Dr Hafeez-ur-Rehman, in his presentation “Hack the Hacker: Cyber Hygiene for All,” said digital hygiene has become essential in modern life and can significantly reduce exposure to cyber risks if practiced properly.

Focus on digital journalism and AI transformation

Senior journalist Aamir Saeed Abbasi discussed changing media trends and the growing influence of digital platforms in news distribution.

PTV News anchor Mahwar Qureshi, speaking on “Digital Journalism and Challenges,” said that while digital media has improved access to information, it has also increased concerns related to misinformation, fact-checking and journalistic ethics.

Assistant Professor Dr Rashid Ammar highlighted the importance of AI literacy, stating that artificial intelligence is transforming sectors including education, healthcare, business and media, making basic understanding essential across professions.

Dr Zubair, in separate remarks, emphasized the role of AI, cybersecurity and journalism in strengthening public trust and addressing misinformation in the digital age.

Youth training and institutional collaboration

Representatives of the Young Journalists Association, including President Muhammad Yousaf Khan, Chairman Malik Zubair Awan and Secretary Coordination Anila Bashir, also attended the seminar.

They said the initiative was aimed at providing training, guidance and professional exposure to emerging journalists to help them adapt to changing media demands.

Riphah FM Radio Station in-charge Irfan Bhatti said collaboration between academic and media institutions is essential for building digital skills and promoting responsible journalism.

At the conclusion of the seminar, shields were presented to speakers in recognition of their contributions, while certificates were distributed among participants.

Organizers said such initiatives would continue to promote cyber awareness, responsible journalism and constructive use of emerging technologies.
