The US Department of Defense has placed 130 research and academic institutions in Iran, Russia and China under restrictions linked to concerns over the transfer of sensitive technologies, according to media reports and a Pentagon announcement.
The move expands US efforts to safeguard defense-related research and prevent the unauthorized transfer of technologies considered critical to national security.
Pentagon cites technology transfer concerns
According to the Pentagon, the listed institutions are considered to present concerns related to the potential unauthorized transfer of sensitive technologies.
The department said the entities will be subject to additional restrictions and oversight under US laws governing defense research, technology transfers and cooperation involving sensitive technologies.
Restrictions target defense cooperation
The Pentagon said the measure is intended to reduce the risk of unauthorized or undesirable transfers of US defense technologies and research.
The restrictions primarily affect activities related to defense cooperation, government funding and technology transfers involving the designated institutions under applicable US regulations.
The announcement did not impose broad sanctions on all academic activities but focuses on defense-related interactions covered by US law.
