SWAT: The University of Swat has initiated discussions on establishing an Institute of Climate Change and Ecosystem Restoration following a meeting between university leadership and a high-level delegation to explore collaboration on climate research, environmental sustainability and capacity building.
The delegation, led by NCA Country Director Stephen Kent and accompanied by former minister Qari Rooh Ullah, met with Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Mohammad Qasim to discuss strengthening academic partnerships aimed at addressing climate change through research, innovation and policy development.
Focus on climate research and environmental resilience
The meeting was attended by the university’s deans, registrar and senior administrative officials. Participants discussed the increasing challenges posed by climate change and the role of higher education institutions in producing research, developing practical solutions and improving resilience to environmental risks.
Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Mohammad Qasim highlighted the university’s academic progress, ongoing research projects and future development plans. He said the proposed Institute of Climate Change and Ecosystem Restoration would serve as a hub for scientific research, policy dialogue and community engagement on climate-related issues.
He also emphasized the need for modern research infrastructure and skilled human resources to support advanced studies in climate science, ecosystem restoration, environmental conservation and sustainable development.
NCA signals interest in collaboration
Stephen Kent welcomed the university’s vision for expanding climate research and praised its commitment to academic excellence. He said the NCA would explore opportunities for collaboration with the University of Swat, particularly in climate change research, institutional capacity building and environmental sustainability.
The meeting concluded with both sides expressing their commitment to developing long-term partnerships that strengthen research, promote sustainable environmental practices and support efforts to address the impacts of climate change.
